A Brief History
Beginnings
Stanfield, Thomas & Associates, LLC was founded in 1988 by Stephen Stanfield and Robert “Bob” Thomas, who initially operated separate tax preparation businesses in Bluff City, Tennessee. Throughout the late 80s and early 90s, the firm focused primarily on tax preparation services, operating from various locations in Bristol.
Expansion
In the late 1990s, the firm expanded its services to include bookkeeping, federal and state reporting, payroll services, client billing, and non-profit financial reviews. We continued to provide tax preparation for individuals and small businesses, including partnerships, LLCs, and corporate returns. We were among the first in Bristol to offer electronic filing for federal and state tax returns.
The firm’s growth was supported by the addition of new staff members, including Crystal McDuffie, EA, Roxanne Mullan, and Judy Stanfield, to better serve our clients. In 2012, Bob Thomas retired, and after Stephen Stanfield’s passing in October 2019, Crystal McDuffie, EA, became the principal and owner. Under Crystal’s leadership, the firm has continued to grow, adding new staff and acquiring Beverly Guy Accounting in Boone, North Carolina.

Our firm is particularly adept at assisting religious and not-for-profit organizations, with a specialization in taxation for ministers and religious workers. Additionally, we offer support for small business startups, retirement and estate planning, and business consulting.
